No—and no. It's exactly the other way round.
- There is a powerful system of redistribution in the EU (EMU) whereby poor states or regions get more federal funding than wealthy states. It has worked since long ago, many years before the common currency was even contemplated as a real political choice.
- The bigger socialists in the EMU would love to expand the scope of redistribution in order to expand their political power. Maybe that's why they take no straightforward steps to extinguish the Greek crisis (which could have been solved years ago if other policies were applied). Admittedly, it sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory, and I don't like conspiracy theories in general. Nevertheless, I have no other explanation apart from pure financial idiocy of the European leaders including Juncker, Merkel, Dijsselbloem and many others. Quite frankly, I find it plausible, too.
