Cowperthwaite was certainly not lazy in the sense of being shy of work. He was only reluctant to do unnecessary things, to perform an activity just for the activity itself. He felt no need to boast about his achievements. Cowperthwaite summed up his part in the colony's success over the decade with some modesty: "I did very little. All I did was to try to prevent some of the things that might undo it."
I wish we had more men like Cowperthwaite.
